Opening ceremony for PME-GEPG05, Intake Aug 2012

It is our pleasure to announce that the Professional Master of Engineering in Geo-Exploration and Petroleum Geo-Engineering (PME_GEPG) has just opened its fifth batch for the academic year 2012-2013. The first four batches have been successfully conducted with students coming from well-known oil and gas companies in Vietnam such as PVEP, VPI, Cuu Long JOC, Thang Long Truong Son JOC, Schlumberger, etc… This year with the same support of these companies, we are eager to receive more staff from TNK and Fairfield

On 22nd October, 2012, we had a warm welcome dinner to new students with our current students and alumni joining and sharing their expertise, experience and feeling spent at AIT-VN

PME-GEPG student to receive the “Excellent Presentation Student’s Award” at the Inte'l Symposium

Mr. Le Anh Tuan (JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration Corp.), PME-GEPG student, has just received the “Excellent Presentation Student’s Award” at the International Symposium organized by the Korean Society of Earth and Exploration Geophysicists (KSEG), 19 – 21 September, 2012. His presented technical paper is “Assessment of the Effect of Gas Saturation on Seismic Data using 2D AVO Forward Modeling”, which is under the supervision of Dr. Pham Huy Giao, the PME-GEPG program coordinator.

The result of the estimation for 4 students for oral presentation and 2 students for poster presentation has been posted on the official symposium website: http://2012symp.seg.or.kr.

PME-GEPG has taken its students on internship to one of the most beautiful sites in the World, the Jeju island of South Korea

From 17 to 23 September, 2012 the Professional Master of Engineering in Geo-Exploration and Petroleum Geo-Engineering (PME-GEPG) program has taken his students to South Korea on an internship trip as part of the study program under the lead of Dr. Pham Huy Giao, the program coordinator. During the one-week long trip, the students could have opportunity to attend the First International Symposium organized by the Korean Society of Earth and Exploration Geophysicists (KSEG on "Geophysics for Discovery and Exploration", which was held at the International Convention Center (ICC) of Jeju Island, on 19-21 September, 2012. Three technical papers of the PME-GEPG programs were selected to be presented at the symposium with one of them being shown off by a student, Mr. Le Anh Tuan, on the topic of “Assessment of the Effect of Gas Saturation on Seismic Data Using 2D AVO Forward Modeling”

From left to right: Mr. Nguyen Van Trieu – TLTS JOC, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoang – PVEP of PetroVietnam, Mr. Chau Dang Khoa – TNK, Mr. Huynh Ho Phuong – Noex, Mr. Truong Thanh An – PVEP, Mr. Le Anh Tuan – Noex, Dr. Pham Huy Giao – PME-GEPG Program Coordinator, Ms. Thuong Nguyen Phuong Trang – Baker Hughes, Ms. Tran Thi Thuy Van – Cuu Long JOC, Mr. Nguyen Quang Hoa – TNK and Mr. Phung Nguyen Thanh – Schlumberger.

The participation of the PME-GEPG professor and students into the KSEG symposium was highly appreciated by Prof. Ki Young Kim, KSEG President and Dr. Mutaek Lim, Chairman of the KSEG Symposium Organization Committee.

At the symposium, students were provided a valuable opportunity to meet and develop a networking with professional colleagues from many countries. Furthermore, this was a rare opportunity to enjoy Jeju Island, registered as a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO, with its unique cultural heritage, spectacular landscapes, and pure air of a Korean autumn.

Immediately after the symposium the group was heading to Daejon, the well-known science and technology hub of South Korea, where Korean Institute of Geology & Minerals (KIGAM) and Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) co-organized a joint seminar for their graduate  students from AIT and UST (University of Science and Technology). This venture was coordinated by Dr. Giao of AIT and Dr. Seonghyung Jang, Director of Petroleum and Marine Information Research Center of KIGAM, also an adjunct faculty member of the PME-GEPG program at AIT-VN, in HCM City since 2010.

Note: Dr. Jang is the 7th from both left.

On 21st September, 2012 a total of 10 research proposals from AIT students and 6 research progress reports from UST students were presented with different interesting topics in G&G, reservoir engineering and CO2 capture & storage. The program of the seminar can be seen in the appendix at the end of this article. The successful half-day seminar continued into a memorable dinner hosted by KIGAM at a traditional Korean restaurant with lively discussions and of course funny stories told by both sides. The night has peaked in a competition between three gentlemen for a beauty of PME-GEPG as seen in the below picture.

Sueng Won Jeong from KIGAM (first from left), Doan Huy Hien from Fair Field Vietnam (second from right) and Nguyen Van Trieu from TL-TS JOC (first from right) had entered a non-compromising drinking competition to win the heart of charming Van. Despite having not yet got any PhD degree like the other two candidates, Trieu has fought very bravely. That seemed to be just the start of a long battle and we hope a worthy winner will come out of these three gentlemen in future. Good luck to all of them.

The day after the seminar, the group had a nice sight-seeing trip around Daejon City, which is located in the heart of Korea and is at the crossroads of national rail and road transport routes.

Relieved after the exam proposals in the heart of Daejon

Impression on the very KIGAM: with over 80 years of operation, KIGAM has grown from a geological survey for geological mapping and mineral resources exploration into a comprehensive geoscience research institute of world’s caliber. The tour of the-state-of-the-art research facilities of KIGAM, e.g., Seismic Data Processing Lab, Gas Hydrate Lab, Earthquake Center  and Geological Museum, had created a strong impact on the visitors from AIT.

Thank you and see you again, KIGAM
